Samsung A640

Sprint this week rolled out a quartet of basic new phones for summer. They're not high-end phones with EVDO, but each phone serves a purpose in Sprint's full lineup. The Samsung A640 is a rather sleek clamshell phone with a slick OLED outer display that disappears into the glossy black front when it's not shining. The sleek black front echoes LG's popular Chocolate phones. The Samsung A640 is a rather sleek clamshell phone with a slick OLED outer display that disappears into the glossy black front when it's not shining. The sleek black front echoes LG's popular Chocolate phones. Its features are mostly basic. The OLED outer display is multi-color, not full-color. That means the blue parts will always be blue, the red parts always red, etc. Unfortunately, the outer display seemed rather dim to us. OLED displays are usually very bright, but this one seemed to be the exception. The main display is rather small at 128 x 160 pixels. The camera is only VGA resolution. However, the A640 does have Push-To-Talk and Bluetooth going for it. It's on the small and light side, but not exceptionally so.Both the Samsung A640 and A420 have a new high-contrast main menu option for those with poor vision. While Sprint is marketing this feature as a major innovation, it's really nothing more than a very simple main menu theme. It would have been nice to see larger fonts throughout the menus and phonebook, for example. Unfortunately this doesn't include that.

i770 Details No Longer Blurry

Phone Scoop has received more details about the i770, a new Pocket PC phone coming from Samsung. The handset is a simple clamshell design that features a butterfly key keyboard like on Sony Ericsson's M600. Each key has two letters, pressing the left half of the key will input one letter while pressing the right will trigger the other. The large bulge in the hinge is a rotating 2 Megapixel camera with flash; it does not face the side, but rotates to face the user or to face out like on many other phones. Other features include Bluetooth, a Micro SD slot, an external color display and a jog switch for scrolling and for media playback control when the phone is closed. Previous FCC filings uncovered that the phone would be a tri-band (900/1800/1900) GSM/EDGE handset running Pocket PC.

Motorola Leads Bluetooth Headset Market
Motorola, the world's second biggest mobile phone maker, controlled 28.2 percent of the Bluetooth headset market, while Denmark's Jabra unit was second with 16.3 percent and Plantronics came in third with 12.3 percent market share.
Driven by market demand for music phones, approximately one in every eight Bluetooth phones sold in 2006 will support A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), a new profile allowing consumers to enjoy wireless music by beaming stereo sound to a stereo Bluetooth headset.
Fueled the by falling prices of Bluetooth headsets, as well as traffic laws requiring handsfree calling while driving, global sales rose 153 percent to 33 million units in 2005, and are expected to grow 70 percent in 2006.

Motorola Capri

At last July's MOTONOW event, Motorola dropped the first tantalizing hints of a RAZR-style slider phone. Then this February, Motorola launched the "Z," a slider phone with distinct RAZR innfluence. Unfortunately the Z was only for Korea.
We don't know the actual model name yet. It could bear the famous RAZR brand (RAZR Z3, perhaps?) although it could just as easily carry a new name, such as "SLDR". All we know at this point is the code name: "Capri".
The overall feel of the phone is excellent. It's a nice size and weight, and the construction quality is quite good.
Like on the RAZR, the housing is mostly metal. Our unit had a "soft touch" rubberized finish. This finish not only looks and feels great, but also resists fingerprint smudges and makes the phone much easier to grip.
The slide mechanism is spring-assisted, so it "snaps" open and closed. Our prototype unit had a very powerful spring action.
One design element borrowed from the RAZR is the antenna bulge at the bottom. This makes the phone difficult to open compared to most other slide-style phones. Since you can't just push on the bottom edge to slide it open, you have to use the raised ridge directly below the display. Unfortunately doing this usually leaves a nice big thumb-print on the bottom of the display, and takes quite a bit of effort due to the powerful spring that holds it shut. To avoid smudging the display, I found myself pushing against the side of the phone to slide it open. The rubberized finish makes this feasible, although it still required quite a bit of effort.
It should be noted that our unit was pre-production hardware, so the slide action could be improved by the time it reaches store shelves.
Regardless, the good news is that this phone certainly won't open by accident in your pocket, something that can be an issue with other sliders.
Like the RAZR, the keypad looks pretty, but also looks terribly unergonomic. Looks are deceiving though, because - just like the RAZR - the keypad is actually a joy to use. Compared to the RAZR keypad, the closer key spacing and fewer rubber dividers don't seem to hinder ergonomics or usability one bit.
Yet another technology carried over from the RAZR is EL (electro-luminescent) backlighting behind the keys. Unlike standard LED backlights that are notoriously uneven, EL technology provides perfectly even light. While the RAZR keys have a blue glow, this phone switches to a cool white color, which looks even better.
The metal battery cover is released via a small button on the top. Just like on the RAZR, you can easily release the battery cover and pull it away in one motion using a fingernail.
The microSD memory card slot is located under the battery cover. It is hot-swappable, so you can swap cards without turning off the phone.
Like all phones currently on the market, this phone has a flaw that prevents it from fully supporting 2 GB memory cards. Like most current phones, you can use a 2 GB card if you format it in the phone, but then the card only works as a 1 GB card.
If this phone properly adhered to the SD card specification, it would work fine with 2 GB cards, but they made an error in implementing the firmware that limits the memory card to 1 GB. It's hard to blame to Motorola for this, since every other manufacturer has made the exact same mistake. This issue affects all current phones with either a microSD or miniSD memory card slot.
While Nokia is committed to fixing the issue and supporting 2 GB cards in all new phones shipping in Q3, other manufacturers are taking longer to address the problem. Motorola plans to start supporting 2 GB cards in some phones by the end of Q3, but it's not clear if this model will receive that fix before it ships.
The good news is that this phone does have FOTA (firmware over-the-air), so even if it doesn't support 2 GB cards at launch, that could (theoretically) be fixed in a update delivered automatically over the network.
Whenever Motorola and other manufacturers finally start shipping phones that support them, SanDisk is ready to start shipping 2 GB cards immediately. They're ready to go (as you can see) - just waiting for phone support.
The SIM card fits in a slot under the microSD card.
This phone also has a standard mini-USB port. This port supports just about everything you might want to do with USB, including charging, data to a laptop, direct printing (PictBridge), and mass storage mode for direct access to the memory card from a PC.
Above the display are two LED indicator lights. A green one on the left lights up with a battery icon when charging. The right one is blue, with a Bluetooth logo, and shows Bluetooth activity. Both are invisible when not lit.
Measuring 17mm thick, it's 3mm thicker than the RAZR, but that's to be expected given the extra room needed for the slide mechanism that runs most of its length. It's also 14 grams heavier than the RAZR, but I still wouldn't call it heavy, and the extra weight keeps it from feeling cheap. There was a slight amount of wiggle in the slide mechanism when open, but I didn't notice it until I checked for it; in everyday use the mechanism feels very well-constructed.
The phone is quad-band GSM. It seems to have EDGE as well. That's our assumption, at least, based on the little "E" icon that frequently appeared at the top of the screen.
It would have been nice to see a larger, QVGA display on this baby, but the 176 x 220 pixel display it does have is quite good. It is very bright, with great color, and looks great indoors and out, even in direct sunlight. Motorola has also tweaked the fonts to look a bit nicer and use a bit of anti-aliasing for a smoother look. Our only gripe about the display is that it seems to be 65,000 colors instead of 262,000. That's not a big deal in most cases, but there was the occasional photo where you could see some banding.
Motorola recently signed a deal with David Beckham for the soccer star to be a "brand ambassador" for the company. Given the timing of World Cup, we thought it would be appropriate to use a Beckham wallpaper for our photo session. However, as of this writing Team USA is still in the running. Go USA!

The Audiovox (owned by UTStarcom) XV6700 is an innovatively new PocketPc CDMA enabled phone designed to provide the duality of a wireless PocketPc PDA that uplinks using windows mobile 5.0 and at the same time its a stylish new Sprint PCS wireless Bluetooth enabled cell phone for all you business tycoons out there. HTC, a Taiwan based designer/manufacturer of wireless cellular technology, once again sets the standards of new product development in this technologically speed driven oriented market and thereby brings the best of both worlds just like the exceptionally new T-mobile MDA? The phone replaces the older, bulkier, and the somewhat crankier Audiovox PPC-6600, which featured the standard slider keyboard design with miniature keys. The Apache/PPC-6700 has a 416 MHz processor, 128 megs of flash ROM, a mini-SD card slot, 1.3 megapixel camera and supports both 1xRTT and EVDO. This was the first Windows Mobile 5 phone to hit the US market and was offered exclusively by Sprint PCS until Jan. 2006 when Verizon began offering their version, the Verizon XV6700. In the Box the Verizon XV6700 comes with a Lithium Ion 1350 mAh battery, a stylus pen, a cradle, a USB to mini-USB sync cable, a world charger, a stereo headset with mic, a leather horizontal case with belt clip, a software CD and a thick printed manual for those late night reading sessions. Thanks to the convenience of the thumb sized keyboard and sideward slider design the Verizon XV6700 is at 1" thick and weighs at just over 6 ounces. The Apache expands using a mini-SD slot with a provided adapter that is located up top and the IR port is on the left side while the mini-USB sync/charge port is on the bottom edge. The Audiovox HTC Apache/PPC-6700 has PCS (1900 MHz) and cellular (800 MHz) bands, and both 1xRTT and EVDO technology for data transfer. Reception isn't the VX6700's strong point. The phone gets 1/2 or 1 bar out of 4, compared to our other Sprint phones such as the Treo 650 and PPC-6601, which manages 2 bars in similar locations. However, this could just be the network talking literally. A carrier change to Verizon (America¡¯s largest network) should severely decrease problems with reception.Verizon XV6700 cell phone review from accessorygeeks.com - The Verizon XV6700 has a large on-screen dialer suitable for manual finger/stylus pen dialing, or you may use the keyboard to dial out. My only concern for such a big LCD is whether it can withstand scratches due to the environment the phone is used in or the amount of times the user dropped his/her phone. However, a protective case of some sorts and a screen protector can minimize these setbacks that occur with time and wear/tear. When the slider keyboard section is open, the device will automatically use numbers rather than letters on the keyboard. Again, like all Pocket PC phones, the Audiovox XV6700 has speed dialing, call history, and call muting, speakerphone as well as other built-in applications that you must discover on your own. The XV6700 unlike a lot of its competitors our there doesn't come with voice recognition dialing, though you can purchase MS Voice Command separately. The sound quality when using the speakerphone is not as expected, however, the volume/sound quality through the earpiece and the included headset are both excellent. The Audiovox HTC Apache/PPC-6700 is designed with a QVGA 240 x 320-transflective-color display that's well suited for web browsing and video playback. The display supports 64,000 colors and can be manipulated to portrait and landscape modes for efficiency and effectiveness for viewpoint perspectives. The Verizon XV6700¡¯s LCD screen display is vividly bright, with crisp clarity/contrast and pleasing color saturation to the eyeFor your entertainment pleasures the Audiovox XV6700 comes with an array of toys. The XV6700 has excellent sound quality through the included stereo earbud headphones, which works good when listening to MP3s, movie soundtracks, and watching videos using the included Windows Media Player Mobile 10 with support for DRM. However, the volume for both PDA audio portion and ringtones is not as loud as expected through the built-in speaker in the Audiovox HTC Apache/PPC-6700. The Verizon VX6700 has a built in 1.3-megapixel digital camera, which can take still/motion shots in JPEG and BMP formats up to 1280 x 1024 resolution. The digital camera also has an LED flash that helps in low light settings, but please don¡¯t call it your late night savior. Turn on the flash and it stays on until you turn it off, and thus it works with photos and video- in fact it makes a great impromptu flashlight. The camera has a macro mode slider switch that surrounds the lens enabling crisp close range shots. Plus, the phone can shoot videos with audio at a maximum resolution of 320 x 240 in MPEG4, Motion JPEG AVI and 3GPP2 formats. The Audiovox XV6700 also has integrated Bluetooth 1.2 and WiFi 802.11b wireless capability. The Audiovox HTC Apache/PCC-6700 ships with a 1350 mAh battery with 3.7 hours talk time, unless you call yourself a heavy data user or watch several hours of video a day, in that case the life your battery should last 1 to 2 days on a full-charge.Overall the Utstarcom XV6700 is a great looking and ergonomic device that was creatively designed for efficiency and style. The keyboard with its large domed keys will useful for email and IM addicts. It's a compact wireless device that runs Windows Mobile 5.0 and has EVDO- that fantastic! The WiFi and Bluetooth abilities will please power users. Call quality and clarity are good and using Verizon instead of Sprint can clear up coverage problems but that¡¯s preferential right. But overall, for us at accessorygeeks.com the phone is a good mix between efficiency and entertainment, a must for all business entrepreneurs.

HELIO KICKFLIP PHONE REVIEW

An aggressive joint mobile phone venture between Internet service provider Earthlink and Korean giant SK Telecom has transformed itself into HELIO, a company that will soon make some tsunami type waves throughout the industry with their introduction of the Helio Kickflip/VK650C. The astounding thing I found out about them is that their trademarks are as follows: Don’t call us a cell phone company and don’t call it a phone. Huh!! Well if you are a nonbeliever then I dare you to take a look at the technology and design specs itself and experience this new generation of wireless freedom.
VK Mobile announced that it will be shipping Helio’s first phone for a US launch . The VK Mobile 650c is a stylish spinner EV-DO phone based on the 600c, which is launching in Korea currently. “Now you can take your space on the go”, with the ability to photo blog on myspace directly from your phone. It comes in an impressive silver colored hard box packaging with a magenetic latch with their Helio logo in white on top of the packaging. Spending this much money on packaging shows me a consumer that these guys has put a quality-based product into the market to compete in the wireless industry. Not only do you get the fabolous box, but yes even the product itself the VK Mobile 650c, the battery, the charger the data cable, a strap to protect against scratches for the vividly large LCD, an adapter for music purposes I would presume and a bunch of instructions in Korean. Yes folks, it is a Korean based phone, that enables the wonderful people of Korean decent to text in Korean and even enables calles to Korea using their competitive international rates, but that’s still in discussion. When comparing this phone to the current market I would associate it most closely to the Sony Ericsson W550i or T-mobile MDA. The VK Mobile 650c is smaller and looks more sleeker and more cleaner for a spinner phone and has plenty of added bonuses for all you Koreans out there in the U.S. market. The kickflip has a talk time of 3.3 hrs and standby time of up to 8 days. Its dimensions are 3.88”(H) X 1.96’’ (W) X .98’’(D) and weighs in at 4.47 ounces. The technology within the VK Mobile 650c encompasses CDMA band frequencies like verizon, and an enhanced internal antenna for superb receptive qualities for either music or conversation with friends or family. The Helio Kickflip has a large 2.2’’ 240 x 320 resolution QVGA display, which is centered to be held vertically for phone use or horizontally for watching videos, as well as TV out for video playback on the large 2.2’’ LCD display. The phone is built with the latest entertainment portals which includes the latest in 3D gaming, VOD, MMS and the an MPEG 4 player for various playback modes. Helio also amazingly includes features in the kickflip like a 2 Megapixel camera with the ability to alter settings digitally and manually on the lens itself, and take vivid night shots, try it out it’s a cool feature. The phone is built with an MP3 player and stereo speakers and even a TransFlash slot for any need for additional memory. The Helio Kickflip is built with something called mega memory, which includes 70MB plus a 1200 contact list capability with the ability to add extra memory via memory cards through the transflash slot provided in the bottom of the phone. The handset design signals Helio’s intent to focus on current streaming video and music (Korean based), similar to other 3G services. Additionally, the FCC has also recently approved the SK Teletech SKY 8300, which is a slider EV-DO phone that shares most the 650c’s features but adds additional buttons for gaming. It is likely this model will also be launched under the Helio umbrella and we at acessorygeeks are awaiting its arrival with much patience.

Sprint TV Phone Leaked On FCC

The FCC today approved the Samsung SPH-M250. A label in the documents confirm this mystery phone is for Sprint. The phone is clearly a clamshell model with Bluetooth. After careful comparison of the test photos to Samsung models, it appears to be a version of the B250, a TV phone Samsung launched in Korea. The B250 has a lid that rotates 90 degrees to watch video in landscape mode. It is possible that this phone is simply a video focused EV-DO handset that will present Sprint's streaming video in landscape. However because the phone was only approved on 1900 MHz band and is not dual-band like Sprint's other handsets, there is likely something more to this phone. It is likely that the phone is 1900 only because of some antenna issues with a mobile TV technology in the 2.5 GHz band and that Sprint will either test or even launch live-TV service with this phone. Sprint has already been running mobile TV trials using TDtv technology from IP Wireless in their 2.5 GHz spectrum.
