iPhone can be Hijacked

As you may know, there's a security flaw on the iPhone that allows it to be hijacked via SMS. Once it has been hijacked, your phone can then hijack all other iPhones on your contact list. The flaw is that SMS burst that allow hackers to gain total control over your phone.

Fortunately, according to British iPhone carrier 02, Apple will be issuing an update this weekend to fix an SMS exploit that allows people to hijack your phone. Apple was very quick to fix the problem, but other windows mobile handsets are still vulnerable to a hijacking.

Motorola Sholes Android phone headed for Verizon?

On the lookout for the Motorola / Android / Verizon trifecta, we dug up some handset renders over at motofan.ru that seem to fit the bill quite well, thank you. According to the site, "Sholes" is a 3.7-inch (480 x 854) touchscreen device that will make its debut in the U.S. in October, featuring: 512MB storage, 256MB RAM, support for microSD / microSDHC up to 16 GB (an 8GB microSD ships with the phone), a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and the expected connectivity (USB, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi), audio, and video formats. And if the translation wasn't hopelessly garbled, the source is also saying that this bad boy will support both CDMA and EVDO Rev A . No word on a price yet, but if this phone does make it to the realm of the real it'll be nice to see a Moto / Android device that doesn't look like it belongs in the hands of a tweenage girl (yeah, we said it, Morrison). See for yourself after the break.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G preorders now shipping, arriving, being touched

If you've preordered one o' them fancy new myTouch 3Gs, check your mailbox, front porch, back door, administrative assistant, or dirty, thieving neighbor -- because it might be there. T-Mobile said that preorders would be shipping at the tail end of July, and sure enough, some folks are starting to get lucky; plebes without preorders will still need to wait until August 5, though, so, you know, either sit there and drool or shout nasty remarks about how you'd rather have a Hero in the meanwhile.

Verizon: America's most reliable 3G Network?

There has been a court battle heating up over an advertising claims by Verizon: America's most reliable 3G network. Verizon's rival AT&T calls it misleading.

In order to settle this issue, Verizon sued AT&T in a Manhattan federal court. Verizon is seeking a judgment that their advertising claims are truthful, accurate, and substantiated.

The dispute was sparked because Verizon said they invented a new formula for calculating "reliability" and according to their formula, their 3G wireless network is the most reliable. However, AT&T believes that the network speed is an essential factor for consumers and it should be a definitive factor in determining a reliable 3G network.

How do you clean a phone?

First of all, why would people clean their phones? It's because not only will it be shinier, it will prolong its life. In order to clean your cell phone, you need to remove the external parts of your cell phone. Then, use rubbing alcohol to clean the external part of the cell phone. You may also want to clean the buttons too.

Then, use a very small amount of glass cleaner on a large cloth to clean the display screen. Make sure you do not get any substances inside of your phone.

Once you clean your phone, it will look extra new and you will like your phone even more. If your external part of the phone cannot be detached from the internal parts, make sure to take extra care.

US Sony Walkman X-series unboxing and hands-on

After waiting what's seemed like an eternity, we've finally got our very own US-spec Sony Walkman NWZ-X1051. Just like the Japanese unit we toyed with a few months ago, there's no denying the sexiness of the hardware here -- the OLED screen is gorgeous, and the faux-granite shell is quite nice in person, lending the whole experience a nice solid feel. We just wish the gigantic FCC sticker on the back wasn't so nasty -- it's strangely cheap compared to everything else about the device. We're putting this thing through its paces and we'll have some more impressions in a bit, but for now check the unboxing and a quick head-to-head with the iPod touch in the gallery!

It looks the same and it feels the same. You just won't have couple apps, but that's fine. Make sure you grab some iPhone 3G accessories to increase your style and defense.

Palm Pre drops to $99 at Best Buy (update: "error is being corrected," says Best Buy)

Interesting -- just a couple days after Sprint CEO Dan Hesse told a conference that "it's too early to tell" if the Pre's a hit while talking about Android, the latest Best Buy ad shows Palm's baby on sale for just $99 on a two-year contract. That ought to spike some sales, but we'll see if its just a one-week special or a permanent drop before we start trying to read any tea leaves here -- anyone running out to grab one?

Update: Best Buy marketing manager John Bernier has chimed in via his Twitter account to say that the Pre is $199 and that the "error is being corrected." It'll be interesting to see if any lucky customers managed to nab the device for less than a Benjamin.

Remember: Take out the battery, wipe, and dry

These days, cell phones are so small that it is simply accident-prone. Especially when it comes to water. When you drop your cell phone in water, it will most likely destroy your phone, unless you act fast, retrieve your phone, and follow the following steps.

The first thing you must do is remove the battery immediately without even hesitating to turn off the phone. Then, you must dry the battery. The battery itself might be damaged, but if your phone is not damaged, it is fairly cheap to replace cell phone batteries.

Next, you need to dry off the cell phone with a absorbent towel as best as possible. If it's possible, try to disassemble the cell phone and dry it separately.

The common myth is that water destroys cell phones but in fact, it is the minerals or other materials in water that destroys phones. Thereby, if you drop your cell phone in a dirty water, take out the battery and rinse it with pure water.

Then of course, you want it dry for at least three days not to an air conditioner. Do not attempt to turn it back on for three days. Since the slightest moisture can react with the battery and cause it to short circuit.

Band Hero's Nintendo DS Lite peripherals get pictured

Holding out for the family-friendly Band Hero on your Nintendo DS Lite? That wait just got a lot tougher. In a move obviously made to tease those already leaning towards purchasing the title when it hits shelves later this year, Activision has pushed out a smattering of renders that show a drum kit covering (ahem, Drum Grip™), guitar fretboard and even a pick to strum the touchscreen. Not much to go on, sure, but it's definitely good for keeping our attention while the dog days of summer drag on. The full, brief announcement is after the break.

Revamped Sony S-Series Walkman pops up in leaked press photos

The well-connected chaps at Sony Insider have it on very good word that the above press shot is showing what'll be a new addition to Sony's Walkman lineup, likely a revision to its popular S Series. Hard to tell scale, but looks like either the screen's gotten bigger or the device smaller. In addition to the four color options -- red, blue, pink, and just peeking in on the right, black -- there's also that perforated grill on the front, which we figure is a good sign of some speaker. Excited? Hold that thought -- according to the mysterious source, this PMP isn't scheduled for arrival anytime soon.

iPhone adoption in the enterprise to climb

In its quarterly investor report, Apple executives said that 5.2 million iPhones were sold in the quarter, a year-over-year unit growth of 626 percent thanks to the release of the iPhone 3G S. The new iPhone is currently constrained worldwide, and managers couldn’t say when the supply problem would ease. In addition, the supply issue could slow upcoming introductions in some world markets by a number of week, executives said.

Just as interesting were the statements about acceptance of enterprise and government market customers for the iPhone. In Tuesday’s analyst conference call, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the company saw great opportunity in these markets.

According to Oppenheimer, some 20 percent of Fortune 100 companies had placed orders of 10,000 units or more. And some governmental agencies had made orders up to 25,000 units.

The security and encryption features of iPhone OS 3.0 is the difference, he said.

HTC Leo edition

The internet is abuzz this morning with the rumor that a new clamshell smartphone is coming soon from HTC. Evidence of the handset, codenamed LEO, is said to have been found within a TouchFLO 3D 2.5 "Manilla" ROM. Its purported specs include a full-QWERTY keypad, external QVGA display, internal 16:9 WVGA display, support for OpenGL 2.0 and a Snapdragon processor. Mmm, Snapdragon. This rumor is pretty messy though, because there is every possibility that the Leo is actually the Omni — a device long rumored to be the successor of the HTC Universal, a Pocket PC that made its retail debut in late 2005. After all, when one thinks about it, the thought of HTC dropping a device it was rumored to be working on very early in 2007 just seems, well, so un-HTC.

Are you using the iPhone?

Interesting data from The Nielsen Company. As their research mentions, as of April 2009, there are 6.4 million active iPhone users in the U.S. There used to be 2.1 million users in 2008. Did you know that there are more 55 and older iPhone users than 13-24 iPhone users.

These data aren't shocking to me. More and more consumers will buy iPhones and even smartphones and the overall usage of applications will only increase.

Nintendo Wii exclusive gaming rundown

We already showed you what exclusive titles you can expect for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, now let's wrap things up with the Nintendo Wii.

Historically, the Wii has benefited from a large amount of solid first-party titles like Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda. It's certainly refreshing to see third-party publishers getting into the mix this year with offerings like Dead Space Extraction and The Conduit.

With the release of Wii MotionPlus, we're beginning to see games that require the accessory to work. Titles like Wii Sports Resort and Red Steel 2 won't play without the advanced motion control attachment.

While it may cost more to play certain games on the Wii, the new technology should open up even more unique and interesting ways to play video games.

White PSP Assasin's Creed Bloodlines bundle to sell for $199

Did anyone else think that Sony would have finally killed off the UMD movie for real by now? Guess again, suckers. The company just spilled some more details on that Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines PSP Entertainment Pack, and in addition to that sexy white PSP-3000 and 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, your $199 will get you an as-yet-unnamed feature film on UMD. Yes, even as Sony tip-toes into the future with the PSPgo, it's still trying to peddle movies on a garbage proprietary format no one ever really wanted and that most studios have stopped supporting. Old habits die hard, we suppose. Video after the break.

Pizza Hut's iPhone App Makes Pizza Ordering Easier, More Gimmicky

Pizza Huthas just unveiled its new iPhone App, one that lets you order food as well as, uh, play a racing game.

This app does what you'd expect it to do — order pizza and wings — while also making full use of the iPhone's functionality to gimmicky effect. When you order wings, for example, you need to shake your phone to get the wings covered in sauce. Cool?

And there's "Hut Racer," a basic-looking racing game that they tacked on there to trick you into opening the app more and then randomly deciding to order a pizza.

But hey, in the end, this is another way to order food without having to interact with another human being, so I'm all for it.

BlackBerry 9520 is the storm 2?

We’ve got some new info that leads us to believe the BlackBerry 9550 will be the model number of the BlackBerry Storm 2 due out later this year on Verizon and probably Vodafone. Besides a much better (hopefully) screen tech, the big news with the BlackBerry Storm 2 is the inclusion of Wi-Fi. Here’s a run down of the specifications for the BlackBerry 9550:

  • CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO Rev. A
  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE
  • Single-band UMTS/HSDPA (2100MHz only)
  • Wi-Fi b,g
  • 3.2 megapixel camera
  • 360×480 resolution capacitive screen
  • OS 5.0

And oh yeah… remember those rumors of a BlackBerry 9520 (AT&T/Rogers 3G Storm)? We’ve confirmed that unit does in fact exist and could possibly be released relatively soon.

New LG Chocolate in the works?

LG is once again rolling out a new Chocolate, if these teaser photos are to be believed. It will be in LG's Black Label line of fashion phones, and looks to be another candy-bar style handset. It'll most likely be available in Europe and Asia only, as a GSM phone, with perhaps a Verizon version later on in the year.

There's already speculation that the BL40 Chocolate phone, as it's being called, will sport a 21:9 wide-screen display, HSDPA support, and perhaps a 5-megapixel camera. All of these projections arebased on the phone's UA profile, according to Unwired View. We don't know much else about it, except that it appears it will launch in August.

PSP2 to be based on iPhone-esque PowerVR GPU, rival original Xbox in power?

If Sony's PSPgo was some halfhearted attempt to quell incessant PSP2 rumoring (and our favorite PSP2 mockup render, above), it certainly doesn't seem to have worked. The new rumor out and about is that the inevitable PSP2 will harbor a PowerVR GPU along the lines of what's present in the new iPhone 3GS. The SGX543MP cited has four cores, with a rating of 133 million polygons per second at the low-end 200MHz mode that seems likely for portable use. GamesIndustry.biz calls this a "ballpark match" for the original Xbox, with some additional Dreamcast rendering enhancements for avoiding wasting time on hidden elements in a scene. They also point out that Imagination Technologies calls the chip a GP-GPU, capable of handling computing tasks in addition to graphics, and potentially giving the PSP2 the power savings of not needing a separate CPU to operate. Sure, it's all a difficult to pin down rumor at the moment, but if anything these sort of specs show what's possible for a new generation of handheld gaming when the likes of Sony and Nintendo are ready to give it to us. Now about a second analog stick...

Apparently iPhone 3GS Time Lapse Footage Can Be Pretty Phenomenal

The iPhone 3GS's video quality may not be all that impressive, but its 3MP stills can apparently capture some incredible time lapse photography provided you seek a suitably inspiring landscape.

Using TimeLapse, available for $2 in the App Store, along with a Gorillapod GoGo, available for $30, one iPhone user shot mountain cloud footage that's worthy of the Discovery Channel (standard def broadcast).

The quality is so good that I figured the reflection you can see in the clip revealed that the footage was phone—a mere camera aimed at a TV screen. But upon further examination, it looks to be an iPhone with the GoGo tripod mount reflecting in a window.

Remarkable Speech-to-Speech Voice Translator Coming to iPhone and Blackberry

Sakhr is a translation company with big clients like the U.S. Department of Defense and Homeland Security. They specialize in English/Arabic translation, and this demo of their iPhone/Blackberry app (not publicly available) looks like the Holy Grail of translation software.

You hold a button, say a phrase and the software captures the information through speech recognition. The text is then translated into either Arabic or English (in the cloud, we believe) and then read aloud so mispronunciation is not an issue.

Of course, voice recognition is one of those fabled computer advancements that's parked in a perpetual spot "right around the corner," but if this app works even with 85% accuracy, that's close enough for most tourists—even if soldiers could find the mistakes a bit more costly.

It's just too bad that Sakhr probably makes too much money off the US government to ever license the tech for those of us who'd just want to trek through Europe without a pocket dictionary. So let's go to war with France so I can visit the Eiffel Tower!
