Motorola executives Ron Garriques and Ed Zander today laid out some of the company's plans for this year. While they refused to show the Scalpel (now officially SCPL) or any other new handsets, they did unveil timelines for a few hotly awaited items. Joking that the Z slider was named after Zander, Garriques revealed that the phone will be coming to both Europe and America later in the year.
He also announced that a version of the Q will be shipping in Europe by fourth quarter of this year. Motorola will be bringing out a line of HSDPA handsets from low end to high end devices during the second half of the year. And although Ed Zander began the presentation by showing off a stream of the Olympics on a DVB-H handset, Motorola said they intend to remain in trials throughout 2006 and then launch the devices with carriers in early 2007.
Garriques also revealed that the RAZR PDA is actually just a slimmed down version of the A series Linux phone sold in China and that new spinners are still forthcoming.
BenQ-Siemens announced two European HSDPA phones today, but the company also announced a GSM/GPRS music phone that will be available in an 850/1800/1900 version. The EF51 is a bar-style phone with a flip down keypad.
The outer keypad features basic phone navigation and music controls, and flips down to reveal a numeric keypad and D-pad. The phone is music centric and features a miniSD slot for storage and Bluetooth including A2DP stereo headphone support.
The music player supports MP3, WMA, and AAC+ and has an innovative interface that allows you to speak the name of a song, which the phone will then search your library for and begin play back. The EF51 also features a 1.3 Megapixel camera and stereo speakers. It is expected in the second quarter.
