Extending its leadership as the nation's largest Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) provider, Sprint announced today that it is offering more choice and flexibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community through enhancements to Sprint IP Relay and Sprint Video Relay Service.
Today, Sprint IP Relay, an Internet relay service, launched a more user-friendly layout, a shorter Web address and faster user connectivity. On Nov. 1, Sprint launched two new Video Relay Service (VRS) enhancements to support sign language users, Sprint VRS Voice Carry Over (VCO) and Spanish VRS, and extended its VRS hours to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"Sprint continually strives to augment its relay services to better meet customer needs and make them easier to use," said Mike Ligas, director of Sprint Relay. "With the enhancements to Sprint IP Relay and Video Relay Services - two already popular assistive services, Sprint Relay is now more accessible to more people with more options for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community."
Sprint IP Relay
Sprint IP Relay is a free service that allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing to enjoy the ease of communicating with hearing individuals from any computer without having to use traditional TTY equipment.
The new Web site, www.SprintIP.com, offers convenient new features for customers as they use Sprint IP Relay, such as:
- Resizable windows to better manage multiple views on the computer screen
- Expansion to other browsers, such as Netscape and FireFox
- Ability to store user preferences, such as font sizes and colors
- Availability on other operating systems, including Mac computers
Sprint VRS VCO and Spanish VRS
Sprint VRS VCO allows a deaf or hard-of-hearing user, who prefers to voice for themselves, to speak directly to their party while a video interpreter signs what the hearing person is saying. Based on the VCO user's communication preference, the video interpreter will use American Sign Language, English-based Sign Language or an English-based Sign Language (close up) option for those that benefit from speech reading to process their VRS call.
Through Spanish VRS, video interpreters can now translate sign language to spoken Spanish and vice versa. Operating hours for Spanish VRS are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday.
Sprint VRS, now available any time day or night, enables users who use sign language to communicate via videoconferencing with a video interpreter through the Internet. The interpreter relays the signed conversation over a standard phone in real time to the hearing caller. By using sign language over the full-motion video, the sign language user can communicate in their natural language and convey facial expression and cues to ensure nothing gets lost in the translation. The sign language user needs a videophone with a television or a Web cam with a computer.
For more information on Sprint Video Relay Service, visit www.sprintvrs.com . To access VRS VCO and Spanish VRS:
- Videophone users: SprintVRSvco.tv or Spanish.sprintvrs.tv
- Web cam users: Sprintvrs.com and click on VCO or Spanish
In addition, on Nov. 15 the company announced that Verizon Delaware has awarded a three-year TRS contract to Sprint to provide assistive communications services for deaf and hearing or speech-impaired customers. Effective Dec. 31, Sprint will replace AT&T as Delaware's official provider of TRS. With the Delaware contract win, Sprint now offers relay services through an intelligent platform in 32 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, New Zealand and to the federal government.
Sprint Relay Portfolio of Services
Sprint has more than 15 years of experience in providing relay services to persons who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-blind, or who have a speech disability to communicate with hearing persons on the phone. Sprint's experience in the field provides the assurance that all Sprint Relay services will meet or exceed Federal Communications Commission requirements for telecommunications relay services (TRS). Relay service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no restrictions on the number of calls placed or call length. For more information, visit www.sprintrelay.com .

Linux Phones Get Standardized
Mon Nov 14, 2005 12:09 pm
The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum, a consortium of leading companies, has come together to accelerate the adoption of Linux in fixed, mobile and converged devices.
The primary goal of the LiPS Forum is to establish standards for the growing numbers of companies providing Linux-based technologies for mobile, fixed and converged telephony terminals. With the rapid increase of Linux's popularity in these markets, there is an increasing need for industry standards to avoid fragmentation and ensure interoperability of technologies from different vendors.
The LiPS Forum intends to support device manufacturers and operators in bringing to market Linux-based devices at a lower cost, while facilitating the programming and development process for software and semiconductor vendors. Additionally, the LiPS Forum plans to foster communication between the open source community and the telecom industry in order to drive market awareness.
Michael Kelley, senior vice president of engineering from PalmSource, commented, "Becoming a part of the LiPS Forum further demonstrates our belief in the potential of Linux and our plans to developing on Linux. We believe that by simplifying the adoption of Linux in fixed, mobile and converged devices, and working to ensure that they match the requirements of operators and consumers, the LiPS Forum will play an important part in making Linux a truly mass market proposition."
About the Linux Phone Standards Forum (LiPS)
The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum is a consortium of leading industry players formed to standardize the Linux-based services and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that most directly influence the development, deployment and interoperability of applications and user-level services.
The success of Linux in phones, as elsewhere, is reliant on standards that ensure interoperability and guard against fragmentation. To date, standardization efforts have focused on the important question of Linux kernel optimization to achieve improved boot time, power management, system footprint and other performance-related factors. But for mass-market telephony terminals, standards that enable key applications and services to be deployed with a high degree of interoperability are at least as important as performance characteristics. LiPS has been created to meet this need that is crucial for modern phones and thus complement current initiatives around Linux standardization.
The founding members are ARM, Cellon, Esmertec, France Telecom / Orange, FSM Labs, Huawei, Jaluna, MIZI Research, MontaVista Software, Open-Plug and PalmSource, Inc.

Sprint today announced the availability of Nextel Direct Send Picture, a first-of-its-kind service that allows Nextel subscribers with capable Nextel phones the ability to send and review a picture quickly and easily, all while on a Nextel Walkie-Talkie call. The picture simultaneously appears on both the user's and recipient's phones during the call - so they can both view and discuss it without changing between voice and data services. This capability builds upon the Direct Send service launched last year that utilizes the Nextel Walkie-Talkie button to send contact information and transfer the data into another subscriber's contact list.
Nextel Direct Send Picture is ideal for those who communicate frequently about site observations and events taking place in real time. For example, realtors could use it to review and discuss a new property on the market with a client. Insurance adjustors assessing damage claims also would find the service valuable as they instantly communicate on-site information to their home office and customers, all using Walkie-Talkie capability.
"With the launch of Nextel Direct Send Picture, Sprint further expands the benefits of the Nextel Walkie-Talkie portfolio by offering enhanced services that move beyond traditional capabilities," said Rena Bhattacharyya, IDC. "Sprint continues to maintain its leadership and build upon its expertise in the push to communicate arena, leveraging an innovative portfolio with an understanding of business telecommunication requirements."
"While sending pictures between mobile phones has been possible for quite some time, Direct Send Picture is unique in the marketplace because it allows customers to look at and discuss an image at the same time," said Tony Krueck, vice president, product development and management, for Sprint. "This kind of simple and efficient communication that is the hallmark of Nextel Walkie-Talkie services is of extreme value to our customers, especially those in the construction, insurance, real estate and public safety sectors."
Using Direct Send to transmit a picture is easy if you have a capable Nextel phone, and involves just a few simple steps. While in a Walkie-Talkie call, a user can take a picture and send it, or select one already saved onto the handset. As part of a special introductory offer, customers will be able to use the Direct Send Picture service free of charge until February 28, 2006. Following the promotional period, users will be charged a per-image fee of $0.25 for images sent and received. Nextel Walkie-Talkie usage may apply to the period of the call before and after the image is transmitted, depending on a customer's rate plan.
Direct Send Picture is now available on the recently announced Motorola i870, and will be included on all future Nextel phones. Software upgrades to enable Direct Send Picture will also be rolled out over the coming weeks for select Nextel phone models already in the market including the Motorola i850, i760, i560, i355 and i275.
Nextel has been at the forefront of Walkie-Talkie innovation for more than 13 years, and has continually enhanced its portfolio of services to provide customers innovative, instant communications options across the country, across borders and virtually everywhere in between. In addition to Direct Send Picture, Nextel Walkie-Talkie services (previously branded Direct Connect) include:
- Nextel Nationwide Walkie-Talkie - instantly connect from coast to coast with any other user on the Nextel National Network.
- Nextel International Walkie-Talkie - instantly connect with other users in and between the U.S. and up to five countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Peru.
- Nextel Group Walkie-Talkie - instantly connect with up to 20 users nationwide at once.
- NextMail - send a voice message to any email address worldwide, even if the recipient is not a Nextel user.
- Direct Talk - makes short-range off-network walkie-talkie conversations possible between users with compatible phones.
- Direct Send Contact - instantly send full contact information and import into a phone's Contact list.

Wed Nov 09, 2005 4:14 pm
Motorola announced today that Motorola Ventures, Motorola's equity investment arm, has made a strategic investment in Tekion, Inc., a North American developer of micro fuel cells for mobile products. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Tekion is driven by the mission to take mobile devices "off the grid". By integrating advanced battery technology with a unique micro fuel cell technology, Tekion is creating a new "personal power source," known as the Formira Power Pack, that will fit inside mobile products and enable consumers to stay connected for as long as needed.
Tekion's unique product technology provides a competitive advantage for portable electronic products in the power range of milliwatts to 50 watts and energy range of 10 to 100 watt-hours. Several products and markets fall within these power and energy levels including: industrial handheld computers, satellite communication devices, notebook PCs, and other mobile products.
"Our decision to invest in Tekion was motivated by its cutting-edge technology and experienced leadership in micro fuel cell development," said Warren Holtsberg, corporate vice president, equity investments and director of Motorola Ventures. "As mobile products have simultaneously miniaturized and increased in functionality, battery capacity has become a significant challenge.Tekion's non-flammable Formira fuel cell technology combined with an advanced battery technology, such as lithium ion, is a practical and efficient solution. Tekion's technology will help advance Motorola's vision of bringing seamless mobility to wireless users."
"With a common vision and focus on wireless devices, Motorola is the ideal strategic partner for Tekion," said Neil Huff, president and chief executive officer of Tekion. "Motorola's investment validates our business plan and further illustrates the need for improved power delivery solutions for mobile products. Our goal is to optimize Formira fuel cell technology for portable electronic devices and to provide end-users with greater flexibility and convenience."

Sprint Launches High-Speed Network
Mon Oct 31, 2005 9:52 am
Sprint today announced the launch of several new and enhanced entertainment, information and communication services that will operate via the high-speed Sprint Power Vision Network. For the first time, U.S. wireless customers will be able to download and purchase full songs over-the-air right from their phone. Customers can also view live TV and 30 multimedia entertainment and news channels; take and share high-resolution pictures and high-quality video; and retrieve customized news, traffic, weather, sports and entertainment information. Initially, the services will be available on two new Sprint Power Vision Phones. The new high-speed services and multimedia phones will give Sprint customers more choice and flexibility to watch, listen, play and do at the speed of life.
"Once again, Sprint is taking convergence to the next level by giving customers the ultimate entertainment experience while on the go," said Len Lauer, chief operating officer for Sprint Nextel. "We were the first in the U.S. to offer live TV on a mobile phone. We were the first to offer streaming music. Now, Sprint is the first to offer full song downloads over-the-air right to your phone. Convergence is here and it's real, making it more convenient than ever for people to stay connected to each other, to information, and to entertainment."
The Sprint Music Store is the first service in the United States that allows wireless customers to purchase and download full-length songs over-the-air to enjoy on their phone or PC. Customers can browse, preview, purchase and listen to hundreds of thousands of full-length songs in stereo sound from virtually every genre from all the major music labels while on the go, right from their Sprint Power Vision Phone. The service can be accessed from the Music icon on the main menu of the phone. Customers receive two copies of the song - one formatted for their phone and another for their PC - and can organize their music and create playlists from the phone.
On Demand is a new service that allows customers to set and then receive customized, up-to-date information based on zip code such as news, sports, weather, money and movies, on demand the way they want it. These five info-channels are included at no additional cost for customers with a Sprint Power Vision Pack. Info-channels including the Oxford American dictionary, TV Guide, unlimited directory search, and maps and driving directions are available for an additional monthly charge. The application is pre-loaded on Sprint Power Vision Phones and can be accessed from the On Demand icon on the main menu.
Sprint TV is an Emmy Award-winning service that allows customers to watch live TV on the go with full-motion video and high-quality audio on their Sprint Power Vision Phone. Customers who subscribe to the enhanced service can choose from 30 channels of live and exclusive on demand programming. Customers can choose from news, sports, weather, movie trailers and entertainment channels from major broadcasting brands including NFL Network and Fox News Channel LIVE, CNN To Go, NBC Mobile, ABC News Now, E! and Cartoon Network. The service also includes a streaming radio channel from Sirius.
Sprint PCS Picture Mail makes it easier and more convenient than ever to instantly take, send and print high-resolution digital pictures using a Sprint Power Vision Phone equipped with a megapixel camera. Receiving photos is also a better experience since incoming messages now appear with a thumbnail view on your phone. Customers can manage and share pictures with friends and family online or from phone-to-phone.
Web Browsing at broadband-like speeds on your phone makes it easier and quicker to stay informed whether you are at home, work, play or somewhere in between.
"The new high-speed entertainment services offered via the Sprint Power Vision Network represents another key milestone in the development of consumer wireless services. Sprint already enjoys the highest revenue per retail subscriber in data-oriented services in the industry and will likely woo many more customers with these new, innovative services," said Lewis Ward, senior wireless analyst at IDC. "The Sprint Music Store is an industry first in terms of over-the-air full track downloads and it really showcases what's possible with state-of-the-art networks."
Two Sprint Power Vision Phones will be available in Sprint Stores and on the Sprint web site at www.sprint.com, including the MM-A940 by Samsung and MM-9000 by Sanyo. Additional models are expected later this year.

Sprint is combining a high-speed network and the best features of consumer electronics into the one device that's always with you, your wireless phone. It's a powerful combination that will only get richer."

The removable TransFLASH memory card can be used to store pictures, videos, voice memos and music. A built-in media player plays multiple digital audio formats including MP3, AAC and AAC+ files, and streams live TV and audio at broadband-like speeds. Bluetooth Wireless Technology and a speakerphone are also included.
The MM-9000 by Sanyo features a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera, digital zoom lens and a camcorder capable of recording and sending up to 30-second video clips. Pictures, videos, voice memos and music can be stored on the removable miniSD card. The media player plays MP3, AAC and AAC+ files and streams live TV and audio at broadband-like speeds.
Sprint Power Vision Packs will include compelling content for all plans and will be priced at $15, $20 and $25 - all of which include a streaming radio channel from Sirius, streaming live news from ABC News Now, and unlimited Web and data access.
