Trolltech Woos Linux Developers With Phones

Trolltech announced they will soon offer a development kit, including a phone, for Linux developers who want to move into mobile applications. Although there are a number of phones that run Linux, none of them will run Linux (C++) applications - even when unlocked for development; typically they only run Java applications. Trolltech, which provides mobile Linux environments for many of the phones currently running the open source OS, is attempting to harness the Linux community, not just for applications, but to actually customize and modify the phone interface itself. Trolltech's Greenphone will ship with source code for all the native phone applications in addition to development tools and the phone itself. The phone is quad-band GSM/EDGE device with a QVGA touch screen, Bluetooth, 1.3 MP camera and a Mini SD slot in addition to 64 MB RAM. Trolltech did not provide specifics on price or a ship date.
